Obituary for James Matthew Heaster

JAMES MATTHEW HEASTER

Jim Heaster departed from his physical body on September 15, 2017, at age 81. He was born in the hills of West Virginia and died in the hills of North Georgia. He spent most of his military/medical career in the South Carolina Low Country.

Husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother, Jim was a retired U.S. Navy Captain and Physician who provided care to sailors, marines and children. For ten years following retirement, he enjoyed being a lifeguard at Dataw Island, SC, where he taught children water safety and instruction.

Jim was cheerful and kind, and definitely the best comic of our family with his endearing and impromptu antics. We treasure all those memories of warmth and laughter.

Here are a few of those happy memories. Jim enjoyed playing the ukulele and singing familiar tunes until just the past month. He might burst into song at any time, like serenading a jam maker with “Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pandowdy”, or a new infant with “God’s Grace To You”. He recorded himself singing bass in the Navy Hymn to be played at the Memorial Service-at-Sea for his wife’s uncle, a retired Naval officer also. Jim would become friends with a child in a grocery cart just by catching the child’s eye with his sweet smile and clever wit.

Smarter than a fifth grader, Jim was also a man of deep introspection and contemplation.

His wife, family and friends will miss him dearly, but they will bid him farewell, knowing that he is returning Home.

Jim’s cremains will be interred in the Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Marble Valley Friends, Inc., P.O. Box 2, Tate, GA 30177 (dedicated to the preservation of historical buildings and structures in Tate and providing education and history of the area.)
