Ms. Paula Jean Bowker passed away on October 30, 2019 after an extended battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Paula, a resident of Pickens County since 1984, was born 7:35 p.m. on June 5, 1947, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Calvin Bowker and America Isabel Morgan Bowker, who were married on May 22, 1942 in Georgetown, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Louise Bowker of Hendersonville, North Carolina, who was born on April 2, 1948, and passed away in October 2017. She was also preceded in death by her nurse and special friend, Dennis Ergle II of Woodstock, Georgia who passed away on October 22, 2019.

Paula spent many of her childhood years in Tallahassee, Florida, area, where her Father was employed by the United States Government, Department of Veteran Affairs, and her mother was a housewife. She graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Political Science. Paula retired after 30 years of service with the Untied States Government in 2006.

Paula enjoyed travel, painting, drawing and sculpting. She was an avid supporter of charities focused on the welfare and rescue of animals, as well as charities and organizations supporting and promoting the arts. She was involved with the Pickens Animal Shelter and the Pickens Arts & Cultural Alliance.

Paula is survived by her adopted sons, Jody Weaver and Chris Baumann of Jasper, Georgia, as well as special friends Judy and Keith Moody of Jasper, Georgia. She is also survived by her loving and devoted companion sitter and friend Anna Marie Kelley of Canton, Georgia, who encouraged and supported her throughout her battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. She is additionally survived by her dear friends and neighbors of more the 25 years, Jeanne and Bill Beecken, and a host of other friends, former co-workers and neighbors.

Per Paula's request, a private celebration of life will be hosted in her Jasper area home, with invitations to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paula's memory to Partners of Pickens Pets, a local 501(c)3, non-profit organization founded by her dear friends, Judy and Keith Moody, which provides assistance and healthcare services to pets across the Pickens County Community.
