Bobbie Evans Edge, age 88, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2023. She was born September 15, 1934 to Robert Maddox Edge and Ermie Evans Edge in Pickens County. She was a 1951 graduate of Pickens High School, a 1955 graduate of Mercer University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a 1962 graduate of George Peabody College for Teachers with a Master of Arts degree.
Bobbie spent 32 years as an elementary school teacher in Atlanta schools, teaching hundreds of children to read and appreciate the stories inside the books they read.
After retiring, Ms. Edge returned to her roots in Pickens County where she took up many causes. Bobbie had a tenderness and compassion for God's creatures and as a volunteer for Pickens Animal Rescue, Ms. Edge supported the group financially and with her time. Taking her well-known and well-loved dog, Fred, along with her to visit the elderly in nursing homes, Bobbie spent countless hours providing companionship to those who needed it most. After Fred passed away, Bobbie adopted another dog, a three-legged Boxer mix named Rob, who also joined her in her nursing home visits.
Learning from a very young age what it meant to be a Christian, Ms. Edge was a cornerstone at First Baptist Church of Jasper, where for years she spent time preparing weekly Sunday School lessons. She taught the Fidelis Sunday School class for over a decade. Bobbie also taught Sunday School at Open Door Baptist Church.
Ms. Edge was a member of the Pickens Association of Retired Teachers, serving as president at one point. She also served on many state-level committees for Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional sorority for educators. She was initiated into Delta Kappa Gamma in 1977 and served as president. Bobbie was honored as the 2008 recipient of the Pickens County Retired Educator's Golden Deed Award.
In addition to teaching young children the art of reading, Ms. Edge recognized a need for Spanish-speaking adults in the community to learn English, volunteering her time as a tutor to aid them in that endeavor.
Bobbie's love of history and teaching combined in the late 1990s when she came up with the idea to renovate the old Talking Rock Schoolhouse, so people could be reminded of the past and how education has evolved through the years. Ms. Edge was credited for spearheading the restoration effort. The schoolhouse now belongs to the town of Talking Rock. In previous years, Ms. Edge and others gave tours for school children and others who thirst for historical knowledge.
In 1989, Bobbie was honored as a volunteer with the Carter Presidential Center.
Bobbie also served as president of the Jasper Lioness Club and was selected in 2007 as the recipient of the Jasper Lions Club Humanitarian Award in honor of Dr. G. H. Perrow.
She was also a supporter and member of the Sharptop Arts Association.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Maddox Edge and Ermie Evans Edge; sister and brother-in-law, Martha Edge Pool and John William Pool; and her nephew, William Edge Pool.
She is survived by her nephews and their wives, John Robert and Shirley Pool, Dan and Christie Pool; niece, Martha Forrest Pool; great-nephews, John A. and Elizabeth Pool and William Adam and Jamie Pool; great-nieces, Madeline Pool and Ellie Pool.
