Charles Brooks Thawley of Jasper, GA passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2022, at the age of 81. The son of the late Charles B. Thawley IV and Ruth F. Thawley of Brunswick, GA, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of over 60 years, Nancy Jernigan Thawley. He is survived by their three daughters, Lauren D. Thawley, Deborah T. Williams (George) and Catherine Brooke Thawley; grandchildren, Brittany W. Fowler (William), Jordan L. Linder (Kimberly), Sarah Anne Williams, Zachary T. Ortman, and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Thawley Bruce (Jim) of St. Simons Island, GA.
An alumnus of Glynn Academy High School in Brunswick, GA, Charlie went on to earn college degrees from The Southern Technical Institute and Mercer University, a Graduate Certificate from George Washington University, and Project Management Professional Certification.
His career was very diverse and included work with government electronics contractors supporting the US military, and work within the telecommunications industry. In his early years, he held several positions which supported testing of Missile Guidance Systems at Eglin Air Force Base and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He then worked a number of years for Boeing Company at Kennedy Space Center in Florida during the Saturn V, Apollo Program. Over the following 30 years, he worked for AT&T and held several management roles, retiring as a Security Systems Project Manager.
Charlie had many interests and hobbies he enjoyed over the years that included hiking, fishing, camping, traveling with his wife, and vacationing with his family. He was also interested in and studied the history of the US Navy, of US military aircraft and the history of US military involvement around the world. He enjoyed artistic wood working and watching his grandchildren participate in sports and other miscellaneous events. He also spent several years tutoring US military recruits in Math and Electronics, preparing them for the Enlistment ASVAB entrance exam, many of whom went on to build successful careers in the US Navy and US Marine Corp.
After they both retired, Charlie and his wife moved to the North Georgia mountains they loved so much, and it was there they lived out the remaining years of their lives together.
Charlie's immeasurable love and dedication to his wife and daughters, love of family, extraordinary sense of humor, his kindness and willingness to help others, his enduring faith and sense of honor and integrity, unwavering admiration and support of our US Navy and military, and his love of Country will be forever a part of his legacy.
A private funeral service will be held at a later time to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the following organizations in his honor:
