Deborah Elaine Dunbar, 74, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Debbie was born on July 11, 1949 in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania and was the only child to her parents Dorothy Bort (Brest) and Laurin "Bud" Bort. Debbie grew up in McKean, Pennsylvania where she attended General McLane High School. While working nearby after high school, she met Leonard Dunbar who, as she told the story, was very persistent in convincing her to go on a date with his youngest son, Bruce. The rest, as they say, is history.
Debbie married Bruce in 1969, and they moved to Girard where they had two daughters, Gale Elaine and Jennifer Grace. But Bruce's desire to get away from those Erie winters and Debbie's adventurous spirit led them to Arizona (where we were amazed by her ability to not burn and freckle), to Snohomish, Washington (where she learned to bowl like a boss), to Burbank, Washington (where she learned what to do with half a pig when you won the local raffle), and then back to Pennsylvania (where she remembered that Erie winters are awful). In 1982, they finally settled in Georgia to be close to Bruce's family, living in several towns before settling in the Ball Ground and Jasper area.
Debbie was always quick with a cheerful greeting and a kind word, and she befriended people with ease. One of the reasons Debbie was such a successful pharmacy technician is that she was a wonderful listener and possessed a genuine desire to help others. Debbie enjoyed gardening, was a compulsive doodler, adored her dogs, had perfect handwriting, and was a voracious reader, but her deepest devotion was reserved for Days of Our Lives (sorry, Bruce).
She was a trusted friend, a dedicated wife, and a loving mother. While her smile could light up a room, her infectious laugh could be heard from across the room (and down the street). Debbie lived her life looking for joy in the ordinary.
Debbie was preceded in death by her father, Laurin Bort, her mother, Dorothy Bort, and her grandson, Joshua Teague.
Debbie is survived by her husband, Bruce Dunbar; her daughters, Gale Stein and Grace Dunbar; her grandchildren, Corey Byrd [Mary Beth] , Elizabeth Teague, Nathaniel Dunbar, and Noah Dunbar; and her great-grandchildren, James Teague, Silas, Maeven, and Lilah Byrd.
A service in celebration of Debbie's life will take place on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at Roper Funeral Home located at 206 Holly Street; Jasper, GA 30143. Family and friends will be received at 1:00 pm with the service beginning at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests that you consider making a donation in Debbie's memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.
