A life well lived.
Delores V. Matthews passed peacefully into the arms of God on July 6, 2023. Delores was born in Philadelphia, PA on January 21, 1932, to Vivian and Walter Pollard. She is preceded in death by her parents and four of five siblings, Geraldine Smith, Bernice Congo, Bobby Pollard, and Henry Pollard. She is survived by her brother Richard Pollard. Delores received her formal education through the Philadelphia school system.
In 1951, Delores married James Matthews Jr. To this union, three children, Darrell of Pittsburgh, PA (Cindy), Lt. Colonel (ret.) Gayling of Atlanta, GA, and Christopher of Indianapolis, IN (LeUyen).
In addition to this, they were blessed with four grandchildren, Morgan, Nicole, and twins Mai An and Tyler. Considered to be a son and daughter, Carlos and Barb Fipchett, and a host of loving family and friends.
Referred to as Delores, Dee, Nana Dee, Aunt Dee, or Mom, she centered her attention on her family. She was a loving, kind, and wonderful friend, wife, and mother. Delores was strong in her love for Jesus Christ, her family, and friends. She loved to cook, which was evident when she baked pies or made extra food so that she could fix a plate for someone who was hungry. Many had the privilege of getting one of her sweet potato pies or her scratch butter pound cakes.
Delores never lacked the right words to say at a time of need or encouragement. She enjoyed socializing and was generous with helping family and friends.
Delores was involved in her children's education and participated in many extra curriculum school activities when possible. She ensured that her children had full access to all the resources at their disposal. You were always welcomed when visiting Delores and were offered something to eat before you left.
She enjoyed traveling during the summer months to spend quality time with her children and grandchildren. Delores also loved to shop. She loved searching for consignment stores and enjoyed shopping with her friends whenever time allowed. She became an expert at designer apparel and found great pleasure in getting a good deal. One of her favorite stores was "Janice's Consigning Women," located in Jasper, GA. Consequently, one of her favorite quotes were, "they wanted ex-number dollars for this", but guess what I paid for it!
