Obituary

Roper Funeral Home and Crematory 206 Holly St Jasper, GA 30143 (706) 253-7500 (706) 253-0040 www.roperfuneralhome.com Elizabeth Gillis Videon, 101, died peacefully on April 14, 2026. Arriving prematurely in December 1924 in Lakeland, Florida, "Betty" was seventh of nine children born to her parents, Irene Tolar Gillis and John Maxie Gillis. According to family lore, the early baby was wrapped in a blanket, placed in a shoebox, and kept warm by the stove. Betty would prove to be a healthy survivor! She loved to reminisce about her childhood in rural Florida surrounded by her brothers and sisters. She would spend a lifetime upholding the value of family. She met and married returning veteran of WWII, Thomas Stetson Videon, Jr. of Gainesville, FL, in 1948. They had nearly 60 years of delight in each other's company before he died in August 2007. During the first years of marriage they lived in Tallahassee, FL where daughter, Kathryn, was born, then Bradenton, FL where son, Thomas Stetson Videon III, joined the family. A move to Atlanta, GA with the Southeastern Underwriters Association (later Insurance Services Office) would mean a permanent home there until Tom's retirement. They joined Emory Baptist Church, and Betty maintained family activities, worked at Emory University in the Bursar's Office, and later helped manage a dental practice. Despite a prejudice against dancing by many Baptists of the time, Betty and Tom were admired for their rhythm and grace on the floor! After retirement, Betty and Tom moved to the Bent Tree community in Jasper, GA, and enjoyed a variety of activities-joining First Baptist Church of Jasper, volunteering as readers to the elementary school children, working the polls at elections, and taking other opportunities to serve their community. They enjoyed golfing and each earned a "Hole In One" trophy. They especially loved family visits and holidays, treating their four grandsons to golf lessons, swimming at the lake, grandma's Southern cooking, and Braves games. All four had an early form of "driver's ed" in the golf cart. The family would like to wholeheartedly thank the wonderful people of Rock Creek Manor for their loving and compassionate care of Betty in the last years of her life. She felt so much security and contentment in those lovely surroundings. Also, we are grateful for the hospice care and kindness offered by the nurses and staff of Compassus. Betty is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Graham (and husband Peter); son, Stetson Videon (and wife Mary Fay); and her four beloved grandsons, Austin Graham (Susana Zialcita), James Graham (Kristen Wawruck), Thomas S. Videon IV, and Robert Videon (Christy Hall); her five great-grandchildren, Thomasina, Nico, Mariana, and Isa Graham and Hudson Videon. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces and their children. Burial of ashes in the Gillis family plot in the historic Newnansville Cemetery outside of Alachua, FL will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family would suggest a donation to First Baptist Church of Jasper, a place that nurtured faith and friendship for Betty and Tom. Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.
