Harvey Arlen Dale, age 87, of Jasper, Georgia passed away Monday, November 8, 2021 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. He was born September 25, 1934, in Wise, Virginia to Alfred Darwin and Sarah Edna Scott Dale. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.
Harvey was born to a music-loving family who made quality, homemade instruments. He enjoyed playing the dulcimer, violin, Indian flute, piano, and Jew's harp. He grew up on a farm outside of Charlottesville, helping his father, exploring, and building things. His father introduced him to woodturning at the young age of 11. His dad always said, "You watch me, and you improve on it." Harvey soon developed a tenacity which enabled him to do just about anything he set his mind to.
Shortly after graduating from Albemarle High School in Crozet, Virginia, he joined the US Air Force as a pilot for the Air Defense Command. He loved his time flying and was a bit of a daredevil in his "wild times," often flying low and performing barrel rolls above the trees. On leave from service, he met his future wife, Margaret, on Valentine's Day 1956 at his sister, Frances's, apartment. When Harvey saw a little picture of Margaret, it was love at first sight, and he made up his mind to choose her as the love of his life. Harvey and Margaret married on May 11, 1957, and were in love for 64 years.
After serving in the Air Force and marrying his wife, Harvey attended and graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Economics in 1962 and a Master's Degree in Statistics in 1963. Harvey worked for Western Electric in Baltimore, John's Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, Southwest Bank in Houston, and Buypass Systems in Marietta, where he retired in 1998.
Harvey dedicated his life to the Lord at the age of 28. He always said there was nothing more important and often stated, "We can't imagine how good it will be," when referring to his future heavenly home. He enjoyed sharing his love of the Lord with others throughout his life. Harvey gifted the world with his smile that had the power to radiate into every heart and shine a light even in the darkest of places. He always strived to solve challenges with loving-kindness and understanding. He had a light and tender humor and loved to share stories and tell jokes. He was an avid woodworker and spent his retirement years making beautiful wood-turned bowls and tables for others.
If you asked a hundred people what Harvey was like, you would get a hundred different responses. Generous. Loyal. Respectful. Loving. Accepting. Gracious. Kind. Tactful. Selfless. Most of all, he was a beloved husband, father, and Poppy. He is now flying high with the Lord. He blessed so many lives, and most of all he loved to love. And love he did.
"His gentle and silent love was louder than a roar. He accepted everyone, the young, the old, the rich, the poor. He was rich in heart and in the Lord, with a gracious spirit and faith as his sword."
Some of Harvey's words of wisdom: "We have got influence, not control"; "Sometimes, God gives us an answer to our prayers immediately, but we are hard of hearing. We must grow a little in spiritual maturity in order to hear his answer. We must stick with prayer long enough to hear what God wants to say."; "God told me, 'Don't stress about the small stuff', and ever since then, I haven't worried about those things". His favorite Bible verse was 1 Corinthians 10:13, and he put special emphasis on 1 Timothy, Chapter 4 as relevant to the times.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Margaret Helen Presley Dale of Jasper, daughter and son-in-law, Myra Elizabeth and George Thomas Hopper of Waleska; grandchildren, Matthew Alexander and Alma Hopper of Adairsville, Brittany Ann and Joshua Williams of Jasper, Stephen Thomas Hopper of Waleska, Lloyd "L.T." and Elizabeth Elswick of Gardners, Pennsylvania; great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Remington Elswick of Pennsylvania; daughter-in-law, Deann Dale of Austell; brother, Herbert Dale of Morristown, Tennessee; sisters, Frances Vazquez of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Gertrude Taylor of Charlottesville, Virginia. Many nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.
