Dr. Jean Adcock Curran
March 4, 1935 - October 19, 2026
Dr. Jean Adcock Curran, 91, of Jasper, Georgia, passed away on October 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on March 4, 1935, Jean grew up in the small community of Cassville, Georgia. The closeness of this community gave her a strong sense of belonging, the confidence to explore, and considerable freedom for a young girl. She regularly walked to church on her own simply for the joy of singing hymns.
Jean was the first in her family to attend college, graduating from Berry College in 1956. She worked her way through school and formed friendships that would last a lifetime. Her adventurous spirit led her to spend the summer of 1960 traveling through Europe. She remained an enthusiastic traveler, lifelong learner, and devoted Berry alumna.
Jean moved to Columbus, Georgia, near Fort Benning, "to meet my husband." And so she did, marrying Frank R. Curran Jr., a career United States Army officer, a short time later. Together they raised three children. Following Frank's retirement from the Army, the family settled in Jasper in 1980.
Jean devoted much of her professional life to education. As librarian and media specialist at Pickens County High School from 1980 until her retirement in 2000, she helped usher local students into the computer age. She introduced the school's first computer, expanded access to educational technology, and worked to strengthen college preparation and opportunities for students. She earned a doctorate in education from Nova University in 1997, focusing on educational technology. She believed deeply in the transformative power of education and the potential of young people.
Her commitment to education continued after retirement. She was active in professional educators' organizations, including Delta Kappa Gamma, an international professional honor society for women educators.
Jean was deeply involved in the Jasper community. She performed with the Tater Patch Players and was an organist and choir member at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, which she and Frank helped establish. She volunteered at Good Samaritan. A dedicated writer and journalist, she was a regular contributor to the Pickens County Progress, reporting on the people, arts, history, and institutions of the community she loved.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank R. Curran Jr.; her parents, Bradley and Ruby Dell Adcock; her brother, Billy Adcock and her niece Sandra Adcock.
She is survived by her children, Catherine Donnelly and husband Steve, Sean Curran and wife Kyle, Stephen Curran; her grandchildren, Evelyn, Amelia, Alana, and Eloisa; and her brother, E.B. Adcock and wife Nancy and their son Randy.
Visitation will be held at Roper Funeral Home in Jasper, Georgia, on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Thursday, October 29, from 10:00 a.m. to noon.
