He was born in Savannah, Georgia and moved to Jacksonville, Florida as a child. He graduated from the University of Florida and subsequently joined the US Army serving as a 1st Lieutenant in Korea. Moving his family to Jasper, Georgia in 1979, he worked for the Georgia Marble Company in Tate for 20 years before finishing his career as the Executive Director of Community Assistance Resources and Emergency Services (CARES) in Pickens County. During his more than 40 years of community engagement in Pickens, Larry was actively involved in civic organizations, youth sports, student mentorship, Royal Ambassadors and global mission work. He served God as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder and was an active member of Mountain View Community Church. Larry is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara Joyce Pitchford Starr; daughter, Krista Starr Williams and husband, David; daughter, Jenny Starr Jones and husband, Jeff; son, Paul Pitchford Starr and wife, Heather; grandchildren, Dakota Williams, Micah and Caroline Jones, Haley, James and Olivia Starr. Larry is also survived by his brothers and sister-in-law, Ralph Starr Jr., David Starr, and Phillip and Nancy Starr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Hardman Starr Sr., Virginia Blackwell and Irene Avera. Funeral Services will be held 3:30 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2022 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with Reverend John Lagana and Reverend Ed Pottorff officiating. Interment will be Saturday, April 23 in Haleburg Cemetery in Haleburg, Alabama. The family will be receiving friends at Roper Funeral Home, Wednesday, April 20, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Thursday, April 21, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CARES at PO Box 1342; Jasper, Georgia 30143.
