Obituary

Roper Funeral Home and Crematory 206 Holly St Jasper, GA 30143 (706) 253-7500 (706) 253-0040 www.roperfuneralhome.com Magdalena "Lena" "Leni" Pommer, 92, passed away in her home on July 19, 2026, with her daughter and son by her side. Born on July 17, 1934, in Hofendorf, Germany, Lena grew up on a farm during WWII and experienced the sadness and tragedy of war at an early age. It is from this time in her life that she found her calling - to make every effort to be especially kind, generous, and helpful to everyone she met. In 1957, she moved to America with one suitcase, knowing no English. She studied constantly, learning English and becoming a proud citizen in 1964. Unable to fulfill her dream of being a nurse, she worked as a corporate cook for 10 years until her daughter was born. In 1961, she married Emil Pommer, and they settled in the Bronx. On the weekends, they spent their time in Croton Falls, New York. After their son was born, they made Croton Falls their permanent residence until 2007, when they moved to Lawrenceville, Georgia. Lena was an avid cook, baker, seamstress, and gardener. Many friends, family, and neighbors were the recipients of her flowers, plants, meals, and desserts. Her cream puffs, birthday cakes, and Christmas cookies were legendary! She also was a lifelong learner, always reading about something new. She believed that anyone could do anything with hard work if they put their mind to it. To her children, Lena will most be remembered for her endless German sayings, which translated into life advice. One such saying, "Freundlichkeit kostet nichts," translates into "Friendship costs nothing," sums up her outlook on life. She was friendly to everyone and would always lend a helping hand whenever and wherever she could. Lena was preceded in death by her husband, Emil Pommer; her parents, Dionys and Katharina Russwurm; her sisters, Fanny Nesslauer and Hildegard Gruner; and her best friend, Maria Gruber. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter, Irene Donahue and her husband, Steve, of Ball Ground, GA; her son, George Pommer and his wife, Carrie Pommer, of Bethel, CT; her grandchildren, Riley, Caitlin, Catherine and Emily; her sister, Sophie Streim; and brothers Erwin Russwurm and Ludwig Russwurm, all of Germany. While her family is deeply saddened by her loss, they take comfort in knowing she is with family and friends who have passed before her. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at a later date, at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. Her family would like to thank all her caregivers, but especially the staff at The Timbers for extending tremendous love, care, and support for Lena over the last 13 months. If you wish to honor Lena's memory, consider giving someone flowers, writing someone a card, sharing love and kindness with your family and friends, or extending an act of kindness to a stranger. Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.
