She was born November 23, 1942, to Charles Romaine, Sr. and Elizabeth Thomason Romaine, at the United States Military base in Columbus, Georgia. Her early childhood years were spent in Connecticut, before moving back to Pine Mountain Valley, Georgia. After graduating from Harris County High School in 1960, Martha went to Berry College where she earned her bachelor's degree with a major in Business and a minor in Home Economics. From there she had a short stint at Lowndes County High School before returning to Pickens County where she spent the next 5 years teaching Business Education at what was then Pickens Area Vocational Technical School. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Jasper where she enjoyed participating in and assisting with teaching the Lamp Lighters Sunday School class, sang in the Joy Chior, and served on various committees throughout the years. Pursuant to her love of teaching and education, she was an active member of Georgia Retired Educators Association, served as an officer in the Pickens County Retired Educators Association, and was the acting secretary of the Pickens County chapter of Beta Eta.
