We would like to honor and commemorate the life of Mary Jeanette (MJ) McDearmid, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dedicated community member in Jasper, who passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, October 27, 2024. She was 74 years old and was surrounded by all her family members.
MJ's life was deeply centered on her family, whom she cherished immensely. She married Bob McDearmid, her high school sweetheart in 1968, and they had three children-Tracey, Misty, and Kerry. Despite hardships, including a divorce and the challenge of raising her family as a single mother while working two jobs, MJ persevered. Later, she earned a nursing license, serving as an LPN at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Unfortunately, her career was cut short after a serious injury in 2001.
Ever resourceful, MJ opened Hill City Café in Jasper, fulfilling her dream of owning a restaurant. It became a local favorite with a varied menu and weekend karaoke. Despite the economic downturn in 2008, MJ left a lasting impact on her community. Afterward, she focused on family life, welcoming her children and grandchildren into her home.
MJ is survived by her three children, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and her sister, Gayle Garrett. Her funeral arrangements are being handled by Roper Funeral Home in Jasper, with a visitation at 11:00 a.m. and a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2024 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home.
Her legacy is one of love, resilience, and community.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.
