"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a ride!'"
That is exactly what Susan Wallace, 79, of Jasper, Georgia, said when she slid into Heaven the morning of August 4, 2026.
Susan, Mom, or, as she was known by her grandchildren, Meme, had an incredible ride over her lifetime. Born and raised in Atlanta, Susan was stirring things up from an early age - she was always a little mischievous.
Following high school, Susan attended Georgia State University and began working with AT&T downtown. It was vacationing with friends from work that she met the father of her two girls, Don, at the beach in Florida.
Following a brief stint in Macon, Susan settled down for a quiet spell in Marietta, where her daughters grew up in the East Cobb area. She began working for Nevins Marketing Group, followed by a career in insurance, starting with Snellings Walters Insurance Agency and later Moore Insurance Services in Blairsville.
While living in Marietta, she reconnected with her best friend from high school, Willie, and they were married on Halloween in 1986.
A restless soul and frankly, tired of traffic, Susan gave up city life for a slower pace in Hayesville, N.C., where she, Willie, and their fur babies called a 100-year-old farmhouse home for many years. Always the exceptional decorator, Susan curated the perfect Southern Living home way before moving north was cool.
In 2005, Susan wanted to be closer to her daughters and her grandchildren, so she and Willie relocated to Blue Ridge. Here they took up full-time RVing, motorcycling - and they never missed any of their grandson's sporting events.
Following Willie's passing in 2017, Susan moved further south to Jasper, where she enjoyed spending time with her friends, her sister, her daughters, and their families.
A sweet Southern drawl, Susan would always call people "sugar", which was sometimes coupled with a few "bless their hearts."
A life well lived. Wow! What a ride!
Susan is survived by her sister, Nancy Shutze, and daughters, Kristie (Joe) Lewis and Carren (Randall) Roberts. Grandchildren: Randy (Stephanie Benitz) Roberts, Jake (Chloe) Lewis, Alex (Brittney) Smith, Kaitlin (Sean Mathews) Lewis, and Austin (Rachel) Smith. Plus, her equally spunky great-granddaughters, Noel and Dakota.
Susan was preceded in death by her husband of more than 30 years, William Wallace.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 26, at 10 a.m., at Roper Funeral Home in Jasper, followed by a luncheon. And you can be assured it will be one to remember.
While flowers are welcome, you may choose to make a donation in Susan's name to the Crazy Horse Memorial or the Pickens County Animal Shelter.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.
