Thurman Harry Slone, Sr., age 88, of Jasper, Georgia, entered eternal rest on December 22, 2024. A kind, patient, and faithful servant of the Lord, Thurman was a devoted husband, father, papaw, and friend whose life radiated love and joy.
Born on June 3, 1936, in Wharton, West Virginia, Thurman was the eldest of four children to Roland Dennis Slone, Sr., and Esther Ruth Slone. Raised in Swannanoa, North Carolina, he graduated from Warren Wilson High School and later earned his Bachelor of Engineering from Marshall University, where he met his beloved wife, Carol. They married in 1959. Thurman served the Army Corps of Engineers, living in Huntington, West Virginia, and then they later moved to Atlanta while he pursued his Master of Civil Engineering at Georgia Tech. Eventually, they settled in Marietta, Georgia, to raise their family, where Thurman served his church and community with humility and grace, holding leadership roles at Campground United Methodist Church.
After retiring from the Corps, Thurman and Carol moved to the Bent Tree community in Jasper, Georgia, where Thurman's industrious spirit continued. He served as a private consultant, lending his expertise to the Army Corps of Engineers and civil projects, including the Courthouse and Administrative Building of Pickens County.
Thurman found joy in golf, fishing, and time spent with his cherished family. Whether fishing with his son, Thurman, Jr., playing golf tournaments with Rodney, attending concerts with Jeff, or delighting in his grandchildren's laughter during "kids' weeks" at Bent Tree, Thurman's steadfast love was evident. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren especially adored their golf cart rides with Papaw. A man of quiet strength, his unwavering love, patience, and faithfulness were a testament to a life well-lived in service to others and to God.
He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 66 years, Carolyn Holland Slone, and his sons, Thurman Harry Slone, Jr. (Kristin) of Oakdale, California, Rodney Lee Slone (Elizabeth) of Marietta, Georgia, and Jeffrey Allen Slone of Seattle, Washington. Also surviving him are seven grandchildren: Jacob of San Clemente, California, Joey (Jessie) of Woodstock, Georgia, Jeremy of Jasper, Georgia, Benjamin (Brittany) of Rydal, Georgia, Holland of Marietta, Georgia, Miller of Marietta, Georgia, and Everett of Oakdale, California. His sister, Joyce Cucinella of Swannanoa, North Carolina, and brother, Danny Slone of Amarillo, Texas, also survive him, along with many great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter, nieces, and nephews.
Thurman is preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Esther Slone, and his brother, Roland Slone, Jr.
A celebration of Thurman's life will be held at Roper Funeral Home in Jasper, Georgia, with Reverend Gerald Thurman officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday, January 4, at 1:00 PM, followed by a service at 2:00 PM. A private family interment will take place at Bent Tree.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Thurman's memory to Georgia Mountain Hospice (https://www.georgiamountainshospice.org/please-donate) or the Bent Tree Foundation Scholarship Fund (https://benttreefoundation.org/donate).
