Obituary

Roper Funeral Home and Crematory 206 Holly St Jasper, GA 30143 (706) 253-7500 (706) 253-0040 www.roperfuneralhome.com William (Bill) Dwight Bennett, 82, died on June 25, 2026, at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper, after an extended illness. He was born on June 30, 1943, in Buffalo, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian Marion Bennett, and Roger Lamar Bennet Sr., his sister, Ellen Marion Bennett, and brother, Roger Lamar Bennett Jr. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Heidi Luchs Bennett, and her immediate family, who cared for him deeply. Bill was a graduate of Sylvania High School's class of 1961 in Sylvania, Ohio, and obtained his undergraduate degree at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio in 1965. Some years later, he earned his Masters degree in Education. He taught in the Pickens County school system for many years in the Special Education Department, and the last years of his career were in Related Vocational Instruction. He also volunteered with the Pickens County Dragonettes basketball team to help players with their individual skills. He strongly believed that women's sports deserve more attention and support than they receive. Bill was a dedicated educator and helped so many during his 30 years of teaching. Music, hiking, basketball, golf, and Native American history were his passions, and he pursued them all with joy and enthusiasm. He played music with his brother, Roger, and a group of friends, known as The Choirboys, every Friday for many years. He absolutely loved The Rolling Stones and listened to their music nearly every day in his last months. Bill was a prolific writer of both lyrics and poetry and filled countless notebooks with his work. He was a very kind and generous man and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. A memorial gathering of close friends and family will take place at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.
